Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary becomes Nelli's new Centre of Excellence as part of a large at-home patient monitoring project funded by NIHR

We are excited about our new partnership with Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary and collaboration with Dr Rhys Thomas and his team to utilize Nelli, an at-home, AI-informed, video monitoring device for adults with intellectual disabilities and epilepsy. Nelli recognises complex seizures from other behaviours to ensure users get the right kind of care and avoid unnecessary emergency and hospital interactions.

We are also honoured that Nelli is one of the few selected technologies that is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) (New funding for 24 technologies to prevent chronic conditions & i4i FAST - September 2025 - Funded projects) aligned with NHS transitioning towards the NHS 10-year health plan moving from hospital to community care, transitioning from analogue to digital, and focusing on prevention over sickness.

Dr Rhys Thomas, Honorary Consultant Neurologist at the RVI’s Neurosciences Centre and a Reader in Epilepsy at Newcastle University: “This NIHR funded study comes at a critical time for us in Newcastle, as we have just been recognised as a centre for excellence with the award of the National Centre for Neurotechnology and Neurorestoration. On a personal level, the fact that this study is designed to help some of the most vulnerable people that we care for, adults with epilepsy and intellectual disability, is particularly gratifying. We are excited to start working with the AI-informed video-monitoring of Nelli, and evaluating the capabilities of this powerful new technology.”

As a result of this collaboration:

  1. Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary becomes a new Nelli Centre of Excellence.
  2. Further adoption of Nelli within the NHS in anticipated, supported with further evidence of clinical and health care economic benefits.
  3. Epilepsy patients with Intellectual Disability, a vulnerable patient population, gain access to improved diagnosis capabilities, reduced admissions, and improved patient care.

Neuro Event Labs looks forward to working with Dr Rhys Thomas and his team in Newcastle to explore how Nelli for adults with Epilepsy and ID can reduce hospital admissions and clinician workload while improving diagnostic performance.
